Ms letter (2pp) written to him in June 1915 by his brother Ivor (Corporal E I Chard) who was serving in France in the 9th Battalion King's Royal Rifle Corps (42nd Brigade, 14th (Light) Division) advising him not to enlist if pressed to do so but to remain at home to look after their mother and explaining that he was already disenchanted with being at the front. Together with: an SPCK Book of Common Prayer inscribed 'A H Chard, Christmas 1915' carried by him after he had joined the colours; a photograph of him in uniform; a brief ts account (3pp, written July 2016) by his daughter, Helen Bright-Chard, about the family's experiences during the Second World War, Alfred Chard being moved to a branch of National Provincial Bank in Bridgwater, Somerset (1942), and being in the Home Guard, with brief memories of air raids, rationing of food and clothes, entertainment on the radio and in the cinema, and VE Day; and a photocopy of Helen's National Registration Identity Card.
