Photocopy of a ts memoir (12pp), written circa 1990, describing his training with the 1st Battalion Border Regiment (1st Airlanding Brigade, 1st Airborne Division) in this country (1942 - 1943), their service in the landings in Sicily and Italy (1943) and, in particular, in the Arnhem operation from 17 - 26 September 1944 during which they found themselves heavily outnumbered by the German forces and fought a costly rearguard action, under heavy shellfire and with a shortage of rations and ammunition, before the remnants of the unit received orders to withdraw; together with the back carbon copy (1p), and a ts transcript (1p), of a pigeon message which Hardy, as the Battalion's Signals Officer, sent to Rear HQ Airborne Forces from Arnhem on 25 September 1944 giving some indication of their dispositions and morale, and a photocopy of a presscutting noting that Hardy was one of a family of eight brothers who all served this country in the Second World War
