A collection of very graphic ms diaries and diary fragments (145 folios in all) with an edited ts transcript (127 pp), kept between September 1940 and August 1944 by a resident of the Isle of Dogs, who was bombed out of his home in May 1941 and subsequently lived in Beckenham and Catford in South East London, describing in vivid detail his service on the Isle of Dogs with a heavy duty rescue squad during the Blitz (September 1940 - May 1941) and the V-1 attacks (June - August 1944) and the effects of the bombing on civilian morale; and also referring to his employment at other times during the war as a bricklayer and conditions on the Home Front, notably rationing and entertainments. With his diaries is a ms account (8pp) written by his wife, Violet, in the 1980s giving her recollections of her and her husband's experiences during the first major German air raid on London on 7 - 8 September 1940.
