Very extensive and important collection of ms diaries (41 volumes) 1893 - 1922, c.2000 letters (both written and received by him) and associated papers relating to his service as: a regimental officer in the Rifle Brigade; Staff College student (1893 - 1894); in the War Office Intelligence Department; on Lord Roberts' Staff during the South African War; as AAG (1903 - 1906); commandant of the Staff College (1907 - 1910); DMO (1910 - 1914); Sub-CGS, GHQ, BEF (1914); Chief Liaison Officer to French GQG (1915 & 1917); GOC IV Corps (1916); British Military Representative on Mission to Russia (1917); British Military Representative on the Supreme War Council (1917 - 1918); CIGS (1918 - 1922); and Conservative MP (1922) until his assassination by Sinn Feiners in June 1922. The collection is particularly relevant to high level strategy and policy making, Anglo-French relations, military policy & operations following the First World War (including in India, the Middle East, the Soviet Union, Silesia, Poland and Germany), British politics (particularly Conservative) during the First World War, and Irish affairs (especially the Curragh incident, 1914, and the Anglo-Irish War, 1919 - 1921). Amongst many high level correspondents, the more important include: Winston Churchill, General Lord Rawlinson, General Sir Walter Congreve, Marshal Foch, Lord Milner, H A Gwynne and Field Marshal Lord Allenby.
