Content description

Ts account (39pp photocopies) in the form of extracts from letters from late 1945 describing: his evacuation from Singapore on 11 February 1942 in the MATA HARI, his capture in the Bangka straits on 15 February, and his experiences as an internee on Sumatra: Palembang (15 - 18 March 1942 and 15 April 1942 - 15 September 1943), Pladjoe (18 March - 14 April 1942), Muntok (16 September 1943 - 25 February 1945) and Loebok Linggau (26 February - September 1945). The account describes his work and the privations suffered as an internee and includes a short account (2pp) by a Malay (?) civilian 'free' in Japanese occupied Singapore written in 1946. Haldane was a (Civilian) garage supervisor at the Singapore Naval Base.
