Papers relating to his conscientious objection during the First World War including his National Registration Card, his two call-up notices (AF W3236) (February and March 1916) from the Recruiting Officer, Croydon, ts transcripts of his local (2pp, March 1916) and appeal (3pp, April 1916) tribunals, a Certificate of Exemption exempting him from combatant service (March 1916), a notice (AF W3455) transferring him from the Non-Combatant Corps to the Army Reserve (September 1916) together with a change of address card (AF W3456), a printed Home Office letter directing him to the Wakefield Work Centre under the Home Office Scheme (November 1916), a cyclostyled set of rules (2pp) for COs at the Wakefield Work Centre, an army card (AF O1845) certifying his service in the Non-Combatant Corps for National Health Insurance purposes (December 1916), a ts letter (2pp, January 1916) from a Mr Chaplin stating in forthright language his complete lack of sympathy with and understanding of his position as a CO and 5 issues (Nos. 7,8,10,11 and 13) of the 'News Sheet', a printed newsletter circulated amongst COs at the Home Office camps and work centres
