Two detailed ms diaries (56pp and 106pp) kept when in command, with the rank of Commodore, of the 2nd Royal Naval Brigade during the expedition to Antwerp (October 1914), their voyage out to the Eastern Mediterranean and final preparations for participation in the Gallipoli landings (February - April 1915), their service in the Cape Helles beachhead, including the 2nd and 3rd Battles of Krithia, from late April until the Brigade was broken up at the end of July, and his appointment in charge of Naval artillery ashore at Gallipoli in August 1915, during which he witnessed the Suvla Bay landings from the destroyer HMS RENARD. The diaries, which are accompanied by a small number of related official papers and one photograph, contain frequent references to his feelings, and those of other senior military and naval officers at Gallipoli, about the progress and prospects for success of the campaign, as well as comments on meetings with Churchill after both the Antwerp expedition and his return from Gallipoli in September 1915.
