Object description

image: An image of a female pilot poised above the cockpit of a plane. She is dressed in a flying cap, goggles, and wears a shirt and tie underneath her jacket. The plane's wing struts run diagonally across the image.

Label

'Women made a fine contribution to victory in the last great war, but on the present occasion they have indeed excelled themselves. In no sphere have they shown greater courage and skill than in the air. The women of the Air Transport Auxiliary, of which Pauline Gower is the leader, have the highly responsible task of flying aircraft between the factories and Royal Air Force Stations.' (from portfolio notes, Women's Work in the War)
