The Battle of Britain

Offer Material to the Collections

Since 1917, the generous donation of every kind of item by individual members of the public has enriched the IWM Collections. These donations have helped to illustrate and record all relevant aspects of modern war and of the individual’s experience of war and wartime life, whether allied or enemy, service or civilian, military or political, social or cultural.

We continue to receive offers from the public. If you are interested in offering us items for our Collections, please read about how to offer objects to us, and about the types of material that we are currently collecting.

You can also read about the War Story project that is collecting material relating to the personal experiences of members of the British Armed Forces who have served in Afghanistan.

We are dedicated to recording people’s experiences of modern conflict, exploring the causes of war and its impact on people’s lives. Our Collections are made up of the everyday and the exceptional, drawn from people of all walks of life. They reflect the total nature of war and reveal stories of people, places, ideas and events.

Across our five branches, we make our unique Collections relevant to contemporary audiences by creating vivid personal stories and powerful physical experiences that engage visitors of all ages with the issues of war and conflict.
